Starved, after 3 years in Aushwitz, Viktor Frankl gave up the only thing he had left, his right to feel hope and love again. Every day had and would be another new hell, then from the bleak heavy grey skies above a dark grey bird managed to land on the barbed wire. For the first time in a long time he felt joy and was reminded of his humanity and need to survive. He risked living for another day and eventually was released.
If we remind ourself that it is ok to feel low, open the front door; already life is different and stinking thinking will disappear.
Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of human freedoms - to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one's own way. Viktor Frankl.
Taking our first few steps physically or meditatively over the threshold are going to be hard but like Viktor, we have no choice but to feel joy at beautiful things.
Outside the front door is hope. Ok! Anxiety too, but if we Feel the Fear, and baby step ourselves towards the gate, tomorrow we can try opening it.
